Art Tirrell Biography

From the mid 1940’s to the end of the 1950’s, Art Tirrell’s family spent its summers on the shore of Lake Ontario at Selkirk Shores State Park. For Art, the draw of the lake never diminished, and in 1963 he returned to Central New York where he found work as a reporter for Dun & Bradstreet, a job that allowed him to practice his writing skills, and also spend weekends Lifeguarding at Sandy Island Beach a few miles north of Selkirk on Lake Ontario.

In 1974, he founded a retail business in Oswego, New York, a small city that straddles the Oswego River where it discharges into Lake Ontario. The business, in its 38th year, is now co-owned with his daughter.

Art is a long-time sailor with a ‘Craig’s List’ of formerly owned things that float, beginning with his father’s sail-rigged Gruman canoe and progressing up and down in size from 6 to 31 feet. He is currently the owner of a beautiful 1982 Freedom 25 which might have some staying power. He is a life member of Oswego Yacht Club, a former USYRU Sportsman of the Year, a former US Sailing Club Race Officer, an honorary member of the Oswego High School Sailing Club, and a former one-design sailor with many years of competitive racing experience.

He began writing again in 1996 and in 2007 Kunati Book Publishers (Toronto-Miami) released his debut novel, The Secret Ever Keeps, which received favorable reviews from Kirkus, ForeWord Magazine, The Historical Novel Review, and others.

The second novel, a baseball yarn titled The Vitaman Effect was released in 2010. A fourth novel is complete and scheduled for release in 2013.

In addition to his novelwriting, he is the owner of LakeOntarioObserver.com, where he reports on news of interest to boaters and others who value this amazing resource, and where he also occasionally publishes an opinion piece.
